Manchester United are looking ahead to the weekend, when they travel to face Manchester City in the first Manchester derby of the 2025/26 campaign.

Ruben Amorim and Co. should recognise that their local rivals aren't in the same shape as yesteryear, with Pep Guardiola integrating several new signings into his setup. This presents the opportunity for United to record successive Premier League victories either side of the international break.

Transfer deadline day happened also between the last fixture and the next, with the club bringing in goalkeeper Senne Lammens. This, plus what Amorim has witnessed in the opening weeks of the campaign, should give the boss food for thought as he works out who select for the next derby chapter.

Here, MEN Sport analyses the latest United headlines moving closer to the return of club football.

Benjamin Sesko backed

Benjamin Sesko experienced a rotten night with Slovenia on Monday, as they lost to Switzerland 3-0 in FIFA World Cup qualifying. He remains without a goal for his new club or his country this season.

But the 22-year-old has been backed nonetheless, with national teammate Andraz Sporar believing with patience he will become a 'complete striker' in next to no time.

According to Goal.com, Sporar told reporters: "What does he bring to United? Everything. He has speed, power, intelligence, good football IQ.

"I believe he can be a complete striker in the next two or three years. But he’s still young. He will help Manchester United a lot, they just need to be patient. I believe he’ll score the goals and every year he will be better and better."

MEN Sport says: United have had a problem of not trusting strikers but that said, the strikers themselves haven't exactly shown they are up to the task. Hopefully Sesko is different and that can only begin when Amorim starts putting some faith in him. At RB Leipzig he would produce some magical moments, so it would be good to see him start vs City.

Altay Bayindir verdict

With Lammens' signing and Andre Onana seemingly on the verge of leaving on loan, Altay Bayindir is Amorim's other goalkeeper option. Amorim will have to decide if he sticks with his existing starter or twists with his new recruit.

If it were up to former Chelsea midfielder and ESPN pundit Craig Burley, it's a clear cut decision.

"Altay Bayindir, they can’t play him," he said. "He might be okay at the old shot-stopping routine - that's what he's paid for, but he’s absolutely useless at dealing with set-pieces.

"This new lad needs to be able to marshal a back four, make saves and have authority and make a statement at set-pieces.

"That’s what every team is going to do against United now, they’re going to launch balls into the box and the goalkeeper needs to be able to deal with it.

"He’s either going to sink or swim. We don’t really know how he’s going to handle this scenario."

MEN Sport says: It makes sense when United have bought a goalkeeper that they make him their new starter. Bayindir was always seen as back-up until Onana did not play the opening games of the season, and as he's not exactly inspired confidence, throw Lammens in straight away.
